Garden of Three Memorial Sculpture completed
In collaboration with Nahal Soreq Municipality
aApproximately sixty-five years ago, a tragic fire broke out in the communal kitchen of the Yesodot Agricultural Co-op Community. Yesodot was established by a group of Pioneers, arriving in Israel after surviving the horrors of the Holocaust. Included amongst the members, were a group of Orphans, who joined the collaborative community. Three of these orphans, lone survivors of their families, were working in the kitchen at the time of the incident, and the fire took their lives. The traumatic event scarred the community, many having witnessed the catastrophe. Left with no family to carry on their names, children born at the time were named for the victims.
Sarita Mandel, is one such woman whose name carries the story. In collaboration with Sarita and other community members, this year, so many years later, a memorial garden was built in their memory. It was an important opportunity for me, to build an outdoor sculpture that members of my ultra-orthodox community could relate to.
Three Giant Bulbous Stones from the Jordan River are threaded by a cable, one side looped, the other side frayed, like three beads whose thread is cut off. The stones are sturdy enough for children to climb on, and permanent enough to retain the precious memory of these Three Young Women.
